It's common knowledge that a firm handshake is important in conveying confidence and making a good first impression, but did you know it can also predict your overall health status and longevity?
Grip strength is the power our hand and forearm muscles can exert to hold, pull, lift or carry objects. Everyday examples are opening a pickle jar, pulling weeds, holding on to a handrail, and carrying groceries.
Research shows that grip strength is an important measure of overall health. In adults of any age, it has been found to be a reliable predictor of muscle strength, muscle mass, bone mineral density and nutritional status. In older adults, grip strength is a reliable indicator of vitality, and an accurate predictor of a decline in physical and mental function.
As your coaches, we understand the importance of grip strength, and regularly incorporate exercises like kettlebell carries or chin-up bar hangs to maintain or increase it.
